What your retired IT is worth, and what moves the number

Nobody can price a used equipment lot from a table, and this page does not pretend to. What it does is name the six things that set the number, in the order they weigh on it, so you can see which of them you still control between now and pickup.

What moves the number, in order of weight

These hold whether the market is strong or soft. The first two are worth more than the other four together, and they are also the two you can still change today.

  • Completeness

Drives, memory, caddies, rails, stands, power leads and chargers are part of the item, not accessories to it. A complete unit outsells a stripped one by more than most sellers expect, and parting a lot out before you sell it is the most expensive thing you can do to it.

  • Quantity and uniformity

Many units of a few models beat a few units of many models. A uniform fleet is graded once and moved as a batch, so it prices better per unit than a storeroom of one-off machines that looks newer on the shelf.

  • Model and generation

Which model it is, and how many generations back it sits. Age moves the number, but it moves it less than completeness or uniformity do. A model with a live repair and parts market holds up for years after it left your fleet.

  • Specification

What is actually inside the chassis. Processor, memory fitted, drive type and capacity, graphics, and on a server the drive count, the rails and the caddies. Two units that look identical on a shelf are different items once the lid is off.

  • Location and freight distance

A lot has to be worth a freight movement, and the freight comes out of the same pot as your payment. Distance from the lane, dock access, stair carries and a liftgate all land in the same number.

  • Timing

This is a live market and it moves week to week. An offer is priced against what is selling now, which is why a written offer stands for 7 days and is repriced after that. Volume also arrives in waves: a lot released alongside every other summer refresh meets more supply than the same lot released off-cycle.

The data decision sits across all six. Removing drives protects you and costs you, and wiping in place, where your policy allows it, usually leaves you better off on both counts. What we can and cannot do about the data on the drives, stated plainly. Freight is the other one worth reading before you agree anything: who pays for what is settled before the truck is booked.

Condition, and why every band is bought

Condition is the factor sellers worry about most and it moves the number least. Cosmetic damage reduces value. It rarely removes it. A unit that does not power on still carries a panel, a keyboard, memory and a board, and we take it inside the lot rather than asking you to sort it out first.

AWorking, clean
BWorking, marked
CWorking, heavy wear
FNon-working
Every band above is bought, in the same lot, at the same time. We do not cherry-pick the working units out of it.

The guide to which equipment holds value and which genuinely does not is the category-by-category version of this page, and it names the equipment no buyer will pay for.

Why nobody in this category publishes a real number

Two reasons, and only one of them is honest. The honest one: the value of a used equipment lot depends on the actual models, the actual condition and the actual week, so a published table is either so wide it tells you nothing or so specific it is wrong by the time you read it.

The other one: a high published number brings the list in, and the number gets revised downward after the equipment has already moved. That is a known pattern, and it is the reason to agree the discrepancy procedure in writing before pickup rather than after. The vetting guide covers what to ask any buyer, including us.

How to get a real number for your actual list

  1. 1

    Send the list.

A spreadsheet, an MDM export, a manifest, or photographs of the pallets. Model numbers help. Rough counts are fine and an incomplete list is better than no list.

  2. 2

We price it against what is moving now.

The number comes from the current channel, not from a table published a year ago. We come back inside 24 hours, and the offer is written on the whole lot, against current market conditions.

  3. 3

You get the terms in writing first.

Payment by ACH or wire transfer, within 3 to 5 business days of verified receipt, plus a written account of anything that arrives different from the list. All of it before you commit.

Our payment terms are set out in full here, and every category we buy has its own page with what qualifies and what we do not take.

Common questions

Why is there no price list on this page?
Because a published table is either so wide that it tells you nothing, or so specific that it is wrong by the time you read it. The value of a lot depends on the actual models, the actual condition and the actual week. So we price your list instead, and we put the figure and the terms in writing before you commit to anything.
Will you give me a number over the phone?
Seth will tell you what a lot like yours has been doing, and whether it is worth going further, in the first call. A firm offer follows the list, because a firm offer made without one is a number that gets revised after the truck arrives. (732) 996-6310
Does condition matter more than age?
Completeness matters more than either. A stripped current-generation laptop is worth less than a complete older one. Before you remove anything from a unit, ask what removing it does to the offer.
What if my list is a guess?
Send the guess. We price against the list and then verify against what arrives, and we tell you what we found item by item before anything is settled. A guess that is roughly right is enough to start.
